In the village of Edderton, formerly known as the "parish of the peats", lies Balblair Distillery, surrounded by beautiful countryside. The distillery,named after the nearby Balblair Farm, where it was originally built in the 1790's, moved to its present site in 1895. The buildings have changed little since then, the main characteristics being the pagoda-roofed kiln, sadly no longer in operation, and the 70 foot high red brick chimney, both visible for miles around.
TASTING NOTE
Colour:
Golden treacle.
Without water
Nose:
Sweet, perfumed, sherry aromas - traces of burnt sugar, butterscotch, lavender and violets. Some peat embers and charred oak.
Palate:
Sweet sherry with resinous, treacle and strong liquorice flavours. Slightly oily with a subtle peat smoke.
With water
Nose:
Sweet, treacle toffees and sherry aromas. Subtle floral note still present - Parma violets, again traces of charred oak.
Palate:
Sherry wood, rich resinous flavours with an edge of peat smoke. Traces of fermented fruit.
Body:
Rich, smooth.
Finish:
Sherry notes with hints of liquorice.
Cask Type:
First Fill Sherry Hogsheads.
Whisky Style:
Rich, mellow flavours - an elegant balance of sherry and distillery character.
